Future Of Mobile Could Be In FCC’s Hands

This coming November 4th, America will be voting on its future. This future not only lies with the 2008 Presidential election, but also with the FCC’s upcoming vote on the rules of the “white spaces” spectrum.

White spaces are unused portions of broadcast TV’s spectrum that serve to limit the interference between television stations. Broadcasting companies have come together to fight this initiative over concerns that using the spectrum for this purpose will cause interference with its signals, even after the FCC’s Office of Engineering Technology concluded interference would not occur.

A vote to open up the “white spaces” could open a floodgate of possibilities to enhance or create new wireless broadband services. This proposal was only given credence last week by the support of the FCC chairman Kevin Martin.

Two months ago, Google started freetheairwaves.com as an online petition to show the FCC how much American’s care about greater access to broadband technology. If this is something you feel passionately about please take a moment to show your support.
