Twitter to Add Homepage Search

Twitter is integrating search into its homepage. “Search” and “Trends” can be found on the home page of a limited number of accounts for beta testing.

The goal for Twitter is to provide more real time traffic in search. Conversations, anything from blogs, Facebook, MySpace or any other social media sites are gaining more and more importance on the web. The internet age has always been an “I want it now” type of medium and that is becoming more and more prevalent as it relates to our searches. Most people want the most up-to-date information they can find.

The big question is, where does Google go from here? Google has always been on the cutting edge of most things search engine related. It would seem that Google wants to get involved with real time search and this is something that lots of bloggers have been wondering about recently. Google has even acknowledged that that real-time search could be a big threat to Google, especially if Facebook were to get involved.

Google is currently involved in the social media aspect of search, but that is mainly through sites like Blogger. If we start to see Twitter and Facebook including search features that take a lot of searches away from Google, one would assume that Google will get more involved in the conversational types of social media like Twitter and Facebook.

As it relates to Twitter, we know how big of an issue privacy is and how quickly you will hear claims of “big brother” and “stalking.” Only publicly accessible accounts will be able to be found in Twitter search results, which accounts for about 90% of Twitter users.

There is 1 Perspective

Makes sense to me. The internet is all about immediacy, so you could see as a possible next step in the evolutionary process. My account doesn’t have the search option yet, but when it does, I look forward to seeing what it’s got.
