  1. Google’s New Algorithm Favoring Top Brands

    Recently, many sites have seen their organic rankings on Google decline while other, more popular,  brand websites have begun ranking at the top of first page results.   According to Aaron Wall’s article, Google’s New Search Rankings Place Heavy Emphasis on Branding, many top brands that were not appearing in rankings before  suddenly are grabbing top placement without any new optimization efforts.  In some cases, brands even have visibility on 80-90% of first page results the most valuable keywords.

    As perhaps a sign of the times, the Los Angeles Times has featured a story on the front page about the importance of SEO.  Lois Draegin, a former editor of TV Guide, has traded in her skills to learn new online ones.  “The Women on the Web,” or WOW, needed Draegin’s magazine-world wisdom, and she needed their guidance through a maze of technology that was as baffling to her as hieroglyphics. In a search for a new job in the media, she had suddenly found herself techno-challenged. She didn’t know a URL from SEO.
