Yahoo No Longer Supports the Meta Keywords Tag

With the recent announcement of Yahoo no longer supporting the meta keywords tag, many are asking, “What’s the point of still using it?” What we will probably find is that many interactive agencies have stopped using this tag a long time ago since other major search engines stopped supporting it. Yahoo was the only major search engine that still supported this meta keywords tag up until about a week ago.

So, you might ask, “Why does 15miles still recommend implementing meta keywords tags to our clients?” Below are a few reasons why, in our overall search engine optimization strategy, we still recommend the use of the meta keywords tag:

1)  Even though the major search engines do not support the meta keywords tag, other smaller search engines still might. In other words, the meta keywords tag may still provide some relevance with some of the Tier Two and Tier Three search engines.

2)  The meta keywords tag helps us verify what keywords we are actually targeting for our clients on any given page.

3)  Our clients can easily check to see which keywords we are targeting throughout their website by simply looking at the meta keywords tag.

4)  When our clients’ competitors’ sites are utilizing meta keywords tags, it helps us to gain insight about what keyword phrases these competitors are targeting which can help us in strategizing SEO efforts for our clients.
