If you’re anything like me, New Year’s Day usually involves nursing a champagne hangover while vowing to really, truly take full advantage of that dreaded gym membership. But if you’re a hockey enthusiast, New Year’s Day involves one thing – the NHL Winter Classic. The 2010 Classic (the third annual) will see the Boston Bruins take on the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park, which will temporarily morph into an outdoor ice rink. But this year’s Classic also brings with it some truly innovative digital advertising sponsorship opportunities.

iPhone Apps Are Landing Sponsorships
Jacob Ciha
The monetization of iPhone apps seems to be gaining ground thanks to developers and publishers who are creating enticing programs, and advertisers who are willing to sponsor them. A recent article in MarketingVOX gave examples of successful apps that have benefited from the popularity of the iPhone and its app concept. It seems as though to attract both viewers and sponsors, the secret sauce for apps is either to save consumers money or offer constantly updated content.

Eight O’Clock Coffee Recruits New Facebook Users
Jacob Ciha
Recently, an article about Eight O’Clock Coffee and its Facebook video caught my eye, probably because we drink so much of the stuff around here. The brand has posted a “how-to” video about joining Facebook on its website geared towards customers who have yet to be members of the social network giant. As the Eight O’Clock spokesperson mentions in the video, sharing a cup of coffee and using Facebook share the characteristic of connecting with friends and family. The video is easy to follow as it goes through the steps of what Facebook is, how to join, adding friends, writing a status message, posting on walls, and…of course…how to become a fan of Eight O’Clock Coffee.

Facebook Trumps Google on Christmas
LeAnn Hoksch
Okay, raise your hand if you, a family member or friend whipped out trusty ol’ Facebook at one or more of your multiple holiday celebrations this year. Be honest, I know it happened at least once. Conversations start rolling and sooner or later you’re on Facebook to show off pictures or the profile of someone you’ve been gabbing about. I’ll admit it did happen at my family Christmas – while my sister navigated Facebook there were swarms of aunts, uncles, cousins and parents who were oh so interested to see pictures of my sister’s new boyfriend.

Holiday Shopping, Las Vegas and a New Year’s Business Resolution
Cory Grassell
While official reports aren’t expected until January 7, many retailers have initially declared increases this past holiday-shopping season (Black Friday through Christmas Eve). Some reports indicated an increase up to 15.5 percent for online sales and an overall increase of 3.6 percent. In support of the online increase, Cyber Monday, which is the first Monday following Black Friday when retailers offer online sales on the heels of Black Friday deals, saw a 5.5 percent increase over last year; however, Black Friday sales could have increased by a mere .5 percent. Of those consumers who purchased holiday gifts online, more people reported being influenced by user-generated ratings and reviews. Furthermore, an increasing amount of consumers followed their favorite retailers via Twitter and Facebook Connect to be advised of the latest coupons, offers and sales.

Google/Yelp Deal Collapses
Jacob Ciha
As you may have already heard, Google has been in talks to buy the local reviews website, Yelp. These negotiations show that Google wants a bigger piece of the Local Search game and Yelp is now a formidable player. However, negotiations have gone south. On Sunday, December 20th, TechCrunch reported that Yelp walked away from the deal and speculated that another buyer – Apple or Microsoft – offered something better. On Monday, December 21st, the New York Times reported that it was Google who walked away because of a lack of transparency from Yelp. It seems that Yelp tried bluffing Google by saying that there was another buyer, when there wasn’t one, in an attempt to drive up Google’s offer. Google called their bluff and now it appears that the deal is dead. I guess neither side will have a new partnership to toast in the New Year.

Tis the Season for Mobile Applications
Jill Jansen
A smartphone is definitely something everyone should have on their wish list this holiday season if it isn’t already. With the increasing popularity of smartphones, and technology becoming more and more advanced, applications for mobile devices such as the iPhone have made it possible for users to do just about anything these days, even their holiday shopping. According to a recent survey conducted by Deloitte, one in five shoppers intend to use their smartphones to shop this holiday season.
