Okay, raise your hand if you, a family member or friend whipped out trusty ol’ Facebook at one or more of your multiple holiday celebrations this year. Be honest, I know it happened at least once. Conversations start rolling and sooner or later you’re on Facebook to show off pictures or the profile of someone you’ve been gabbing about. I’ll admit it did happen at my family Christmas – while my sister navigated Facebook there were swarms of aunts, uncles, cousins and parents who were oh so interested to see pictures of my sister’s new boyfriend.
Now, raise the other hand if you logged onto to Facebook to update your status letting everyone know you got the earrings you wanted from your significant other or the new plasma TV you’ve been waiting months for. I know I read multiple statuses such as, ‘I just spent 4 hours battling my brother in Beatles Rock Band and I won!’ or ‘Wii Super Mario Brothers here I come’. And finally, re-raise your first hand if you wished someone happy holidays via a wall post.
It’s true – for the first time in web history Facebook was the most visited site on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. According to Hitwise, Facebook held 7.56% market share on Christmas Eve while Google followed very closely behind with 7.54% market share. And again, on Christmas Day, Facebook increased their lead to 7.81% market share while Google fell slightly more behind with 7.51% market share.
With all the holiday excitement and the need to share the mega moments of our lives with all our Facebook friends, it’s no wonder Facebook surpassed Google. Can we mark this as a historic milestone? Both you and I can one day tell our grandkids where we were when Facebook trumped Google during Christmas ’09.
