  1. Foursquare Is Still The Mayor of Location-Based Services…For Now

    Joanna J. Cheney

The LA Times posed the question, “Is Facebook Places a foursquare killer?” the day of the Facebook Places launch. At first glance, one would be remiss to disagree, as Facebook’s social prowess makes foursquare’s location-based service look puny in comparison.

However, just four days after Facebook launched Facebook Places, foursquare marked its biggest growth spurt ever. Fourquare increased from 2.6 million users before Facebook’s mobile social validating launch on August 19th to 3 million users as of August 29th. According to Mashable.com, foursquare will continue to grow at a rate of 15,000 users a day.

The votes are in, and it seems foursquare is still the mayor of location-based mobile social networks. Why? Well, there are many takes on the issue out there.  Read the full article…

  2. Superpages Site Redesign: A Whole New World

    Jon Legler

As I sat at my computer last night constantly hitting the refresh button on my browser I could not help but to compare myself to an iPhone owner eagerly awaiting the launch of iOS4.  Then suddenly it happened; the new Superpages.com site was here.  After taking in the scenery of the new homepage I quickly dove into searching.

  3. Is Search Boring? Google May Think So

    Jamie LeRoy

When charged with finding out the latest and greatest in the search-marketing world, one might be hard-pressed to find anything that’s really newsworthy. Besides the recent merger of Bing and Yahoo!, there hasn’t been a juicy search marketing story to hit the industry in quite some time.

Social media, on the other hand, has no problem staying newsworthy. Whether it’s a new location-based check-in application or a privacy issue, social media is always in the news. Maybe that’s why Google is rumored to be creating its own social network. Google misses the days when it covered the proverbial front pages and was the center of the industry’s attention.

  5. Reflections on SES San Francisco

    Liz Serafin

I had the opportunity to attend the Search Engine Strategies conference the week of August 16th in San Francisco, and now, approximately a week later, as I review the conference materials, my mess of scribbled notes, and the slew of tweets highlighting those nuggets of information shared by various speakers during the show, I find myself in a reflection mode. What did I learn? What value did I take away from the conference? To sum it up, the key message that I walked away with, is that the space is changing… and QUICKLY, and as marketers, we need to adapt, test, and innovate if we are to help define future strategies. 6. Will Google’s Live Update Help Or Hurt Paid Search?

    Courtney Keller

Last weekend, SEO consultant Rob Ousbey experienced something new while performing a Google search: results were updated in real time as he entered keywords, changing in the blink of an eye before he even pushed ‘enter’. This streaming search results trial is speculated to be a part of Caffeine, Google’s latest project to make the Web even faster. (See it in action here)

But what does this live update of search results mean for the future of paid search? Read the full article…

  7. Yellowbook to Launch Daily Deal Site

    Nicholas Grohne

It appears as though Yellowbook will be the first US YP publisher to launch efforts into the group buying market when they launch “Weforia” next month. This new endeavor will be tested in three markets: Phoenix, Boston and Ft. Myers, with expansion expected, assuming success. The daily deals will appear on their own sites, as well as in conjunction with Yellowbook.com and via Yellowbook’s mobile application. So far, sales teams have generated a lot of interest from businesses, and there does not appear to be any shortage of deals.
