The speculation and hype surrounding Google’s mobile phone can finally come to an end. If you haven’t heard by now, Internet search giant Google finally unveiled its highly anticipated smartphone this week. The phone dubbed Nexus One was designed by Taiwan-based phone company HTC and showcases the latest Android 2.1 mobile-operating system. The phone features many state-of-the-art capabilties, including a voice-enabled keyboard that allows users to send texts, e-mails or Facebook updates by speaking directly into the phone. Another feature that has yet to be offered by other smartphones on the market is the ability to purchase Nexus One directly from Google (at a mere $530.00); the phone is available with or without a mobile service provider.
These innovations have left many consumers to question whether or not Nexus One has what it takes to “kill” the iPhone. While both phones have their own unique operating systems and capabilities, the “Nexus One vs. iPhone” debate will ultimately be waged by consumers. One fan of Nexus One, Gizmodo’s John Herman, stated in an article posted on ABC.com, “It’s faster than anything else out there right now. It’s got a better screen than anything out there right now. The software is a newer version. It’s all around an impressive piece of hardware.” Mobile industry analyst Kevin Burden is less skeptical, stating on CNN.com, “I don’t think anything is an iPhone killer. Was the iPhone a Blackberry killer? It’s never going to be that one device that was promised to us a decade ago.”
It remains to be seen whether or not Nexus One is truly an “iPhone killer.” But what is certain is that the release of this new “superphone” has left smartphone users with another option, and it will only be a matter of time before a newer, bigger and better smartphone comes along.
