What’s New in the World of Social Media?

With something new and exciting happening in the world of social media seemingly everyday, keeping up can be hard. If you’ve lost track of the latest developments, let’s recap some recent changes.

Fresh off Google’s announcement of its social site, Google Buzz, Yahoo! jumped on the social bandwagon and announced this week a partnership with Twitter. A union between the two will now allow users to easily share content on both sites. Yahoo!’s 600 million users will now have easier access to Twitter, a site that eMarketer credits with 29 percent of users sharing online content.

In a more bizarre twist on social media, a new website was recently developed to examine the more dangerous side of location-sharing information, which is sometimes all but forgotten when it comes to social media. Enter the website PleaseRobMeNow.com (and, yes, you read that right). This website does nothing more than aggregate publicly shared check-ins, however the ultimate goal of the site is to shed light on the danger of public sharing by having check-ins referred to as “recent empty homes” and “new opportunities.”

With all the hype surrounding social media lately, we sometimes forget the effects that publicly shared sites can have on us. Not too long ago, my mother told me that I should never update my Facebook status by saying I was out of town because someone who read my page could rob my apartment. Today, that’s become a reality, as robberies tied to social media have become commonplace in the news. As social media explodes and becomes more centralized into our daily lives, it’s hard to grasp that these problems are realities.

While it is safe to say social media is here to stay, what exactly will evolve from this phenomenon has yet to be determined. One thing is for sure: It will be quite the journey to see what will happen in the next month, or even a year from now.
