Mobile Access of Facebook and Twitter Soars

Need more evidence that social networking is a true phenomenon? Look no further than a recent comScore study on social-media use via mobile browsers. The study found that social sites Facebook and Twitter have experienced triple-digit growth from users accessing the sites via their mobile phones since January 2009.

Results revealed that 4.7 million people accessed Twitter on their mobile browser in January 2010, compared to one million a year earlier, an increase of 347 percent. Facebook also witnessed significant growth among mobile users, increasing 112 percent from 11.8 million users in 2009 to over 25 million in January 2010.

And what seems to be further evidence that MySpace is continuing to lose momentum, it was the only major social network to lose users in the past year. In January 2009, the social network had around 12 million mobile users, and, in January 2010, the number had fallen to 11.4 million, a decrease of 7 percent.

The study really drives home the rapid growth that both social-networking sites and smartphones are experiencing. In fact, when I log on to my personal Facebook page, I see that more of my friends’ status updates are originating from their mobile devices. And just last month, I made my first update via my iPhone, commenting on a movie I had just seen. In the on-the-go environment we live in, it should come as no surprise that people are turning to their mobile devices to access information.

Besides, you wouldn’t want to be the last person to find out your favorite player was being traded to another team…or that your favorite celebrity couple was on the rocks, would you?
