Facebook Changing its Face with Microsoft

Microsoft will soon be providing search and paid listings on Facebook. The launch is expected later this fall.  Facebook has not decided how much of Microsoft’s search will be implemented or how much inventory will be offered. Microsoft is hoping that the deal will increase their revenue per search.

Social Networking Reaching Mobile Audience

According to research by Nielsen Mobile, over 4 million mobile phone users are accessing social networking sites via mobile internet.  MySpace, the leading social networking site among PC users, is also the most popular mobile internet social networking site in the U.S. with 2.8 million unique mobile users in December 2007.  In that same month, Facebook had about 1.8 million unique mobile users.  “Consumer demand for mobile social networking may be a significant driver of mobile service pricing models, as evidenced by Vodafone UK’s recent move to offer unlimited internet access as a standard feature of its new monthly mobile price plans,” says Jeff Herrmann, vice-president of Mobile Media at Nielsen Mobile.

SES NYC 2008: Afternoon Keynote with Jason Calacanis

Mahalo.com’s Jason Calacanis had a candid conversation with a packed ballroom and moderator Kevin Ryan. The house may have had search marketers of all kinds, but I suspect SEOs could have been there in high numbers due to the perceived history of SEO bashing on Calacanis’s part.  He began by clearing the air as he clarified that his past SEO remarks were directed at black even grey hat tacticians and proclaimed to be a Search Engine Optimizer himself, if making friendly content defined the practice. Social network traffic continues to increase at a dramatic rate. To date, however, these sites have had a challenge in leveraging this traffic into revenue and ad platforms. Survey Says: Social Marketing Here To Stay

In a survey conducted by TNS Media Intelligence of 71 marketing professionals in the U.S., Canada, France and the U.K., not even one respondent saw social media as a passing fad. Nearly 30% called it a “revolutionary new opportunity that must be grasped with a sense of urgency.” The U.S. had a higher concentration of exuberance, with 45% of respondents calling social media revolutionary.
