Here we are in 2007 and we’re just now getting to the good stuff. True, we’ve yet to make hover boards like those featured in Back To The Future Part II almost 20 years ago, but the evolution of a pocket-sized computer is a significant step forward. While we’ve had advanced devices like the Blackberry and Treo, Apple’s iPhone could be the first to fully take advantage of this market and change our perception of what a mobile phone is and what it should be capable of. Sporting the first fully supported HTML browser on a phone, we SEOs are salivating at what mobile search can become now that we possibly have a legitimate device that can deliver the Internet to our phones in a presentable and functional manner.

If the iPhone delivers, the mobile search marketplace will officially commence the day of its release. Mobile technology will finally catch up with our mobile lifestyle. The days of walking down the street and surfing the web for the closest deli near you are here. Gone are the days of never having enough information available to make a decision. Not only is this convenient, but it also opens up a whole new way for businesses to market themselves in a more location specific manner. This, in turn, puts more emphasis on search advertising.

There are several factors that could prevent the iPhone from becoming the next big thing; the first being service. Much like in the evolution of the Internet, high speeds can either make it or break it. The slow speed of the Internet in the early days frustrated the user and thus kept the Net from being integrated in the users’ lives. As connection speeds got faster and service became more affordable, people incorporated the Net into their daily lives. The same will hold true for the iPhone if the service isn’t up to par.

The same goes for battery life. With all the applications the iPhone has, running multiple ones simultaneously will be taxing on the battery. How the battery reacts in the reasonably small iPhone remains to be seen and could also have a big impact on the success of Apple’s new device.

All in all, there’s plenty to be excited about with the iPhone. Apple usually delivers on their products and the features that have been presented to the public so far are pretty impressive. Time will tell if Apple is breaking ground with a lifestyle changing device or if the iPhone will be a dud on the battlefield that is mobile technology. My money is on the former.
