Googling, DVRing, Facebooking and Tweeting: What’s Next?
LeAnn Hoksch
I may be young, but can anyone really recall when a Kleenex was a tissue, a Band-Aid was a bandage, and Saran Wrap was plastic wrap or cellophane?
I’m sure you’re wondering where this thought originated. It all started when I visited my family over the holidays, and I told my sister to “Google” directions. My mother asked why I said “Google,” rather than simply tell my sister to look up directions. This continued into a slightly heated argument on the topic.
This trend of turning a brand name into a general name for a product or action is known as genericide (this has been around long before Google and Twitter). Read the full article…

Eight O’Clock Coffee Recruits New Facebook Users
Jacob Ciha
Recently, an article about Eight O’Clock Coffee and its Facebook video caught my eye, probably because we drink so much of the stuff around here. The brand has posted a “how-to” video about joining Facebook on its website geared towards customers who have yet to be members of the social network giant. As the Eight O’Clock spokesperson mentions in the video, sharing a cup of coffee and using Facebook share the characteristic of connecting with friends and family. The video is easy to follow as it goes through the steps of what Facebook is, how to join, adding friends, writing a status message, posting on walls, and…of course…how to become a fan of Eight O’Clock Coffee.

Facebook Trumps Google on Christmas
LeAnn Hoksch
Okay, raise your hand if you, a family member or friend whipped out trusty ol’ Facebook at one or more of your multiple holiday celebrations this year. Be honest, I know it happened at least once. Conversations start rolling and sooner or later you’re on Facebook to show off pictures or the profile of someone you’ve been gabbing about. I’ll admit it did happen at my family Christmas – while my sister navigated Facebook there were swarms of aunts, uncles, cousins and parents who were oh so interested to see pictures of my sister’s new boyfriend.

How Facebook Influenced My Holiday Wish List
Erin Oechsner
The holidays are finally here, and we’re all scrambling to get our shopping done in time for holiday celebrations. As a child, I remember intently paging through every page of the toy section in the annual store catalogs to make my holiday wish list. As I got older, I found gift ideas through magazines, TV, radio, and of course, suggestions from friends and family (i.e. word of mouth). Today, it is amazing how much the Internet affects my buying decisions. Read the full article…

Are Facebook Ads Going Too Far?
Jamie LeRoy
As a marketing analyst for an interactive agency, I have the pleasure of staying current with the latest and greatest in our industry. I was there when Facebook decided to start showing ads on its site. I was behind the scenes learning about how to monetize this (which is ongoing) when clients came to us with questions. And now, with a wealth of supporting research and success stories, I’m fully confident when I tell our clients that, yes, they should target their consumers on social networks. Everyone should! It’s a great medium. I feel like shouting it from the rooftops: Get on Facebook!

Is Blocking Social Media at Work Counterproductive?
Jacob Ciha
Recently, USA Today reported that 54 percent of companies block their employees’ access to Facebook, and another 35 percent have established some form of limits. This may not come as much of a surprise, and the reason behind this is common sense: Businesses don’t want their employees frivolously spending time updating their statuses or playing FarmVille. Okay, that seems reasonable, but what if I told you that blocking social media sites from your employees is the wrong way to handle this media? In reality, companies should do the opposite and allow them to be active within this social space. Read the full article…
