Upon its unveiling, it seemed like the iPad received more criticism than praise. In fact, before I started researching it, I don’t believe I heard a single positive review about the product. The complaints included (but are not limited to) its size and awkwardness, the lack of multitasking capabilities and even its name (which has bothered some, and by some, I mean a lot). So who in the world is going to need or want one of these new technological devices?

Successful iPhone Applications Drive Revenue
Michael Solms
I think we are all familiar with iPhone’s “There’s an App for That” commercials. I used to be amused by the gimmicky applications such as the Zippo lighter, and would show them off to my friends, especially those who didn’t have iPhones. Then I’d get bored and delete them only to download another useless app the very next day. However, with top name businesses getting into the mix, my mindset toward mobile apps has completely changed. I now restrict my iPhone space to applications that are going to serve a purpose and benefit me as a consumer.

Mobile Click to Call, Y’all
Tara Daniels
Last week, Google announced a new click-to-call program for mobile search will launch in January. This coincides quite nicely with the release of Google’s own mobile phone: Nexus One. The click-to-call listings won’t just appear on the Nexus One, though. Click-to-call ads will be found on any “high-end” mobile device with a full HTML browser.
How will it work? Based on a user’s geographic location, a location-specific phone number will appear next to the URL on paid ads that typically appear on mobile devices. Users can choose to click on the phone number to dial the business instantly, or click on the URL to be directed to the business’ website as usual. Currently, not all Google ads are eligible for this feature, but plans to expand the program are on the horizon.

Jill Jansen
The speculation and hype surrounding Google’s mobile phone can finally come to an end. If you haven’t heard by now, Internet search giant Google finally unveiled its highly anticipated smartphone this week. The phone dubbed Nexus One was designed by Taiwan-based phone company HTC and showcases the latest Android 2.1 mobile-operating system. The phone features many state-of-the-art capabilties, including a voice-enabled keyboard that allows users to send texts, e-mails or Facebook updates by speaking directly into the phone. Another feature that has yet to be offered by other smartphones on the market is the ability to purchase Nexus One directly from Google (at a mere $530.00); the phone is available with or without a mobile service provider.

iPhone Apps Are Landing Sponsorships
Jacob Ciha
The monetization of iPhone apps seems to be gaining ground thanks to developers and publishers who are creating enticing programs, and advertisers who are willing to sponsor them. A recent article in MarketingVOX gave examples of successful apps that have benefited from the popularity of the iPhone and its app concept. It seems as though to attract both viewers and sponsors, the secret sauce for apps is either to save consumers money or offer constantly updated content.

Tis the Season for Mobile Applications

A smartphone is definitely something everyone should have on their wish list this holiday season if it isn’t already. With the increasing popularity of smartphones, and technology becoming more and more advanced, applications for mobile devices such as the iPhone have made it possible for users to do just about anything these days, even their holiday shopping. According to a recent survey conducted by Deloitte, one in five shoppers intend to use their smartphones to shop this holiday season.
