Talks of a merger agreement between the Yellow Pages Association (YPA) and Association of Directory Marketing (ADM) have been in works for quite some time, and the merger is now coming closer to a reality. Two weeks ago, board members from both organizations gave unanimous approval to merge the two organizations. With the board members’ approval, the merger now moves toward a vote from each organizations’ members. Members are expected to reach a vote by the end of November, and a merger seems all but imminent. The newly formed organization would become effective in January 2010. Read the full article…

What IYPs Are Ranking the Best on Google?
Jacob Ciha
One of the challenges for a local business that wants to rank for phrases like “reno dentist” or “nashville accountant” is that the large Internet yellow pages sites and similar local directories often take up a lot of the real estate on search results pages for “city category” phrases. Ergo, one of the most basic pieces of local SEO advice is to piggyback on the authority that these IYPs and directories already have.

Local Search Becoming the Norm
Jamie LeRoy
In a recent study released by YPA & comScore, local search grew 58% in 2008, whereas overall searches only increased by 21% year-over-year. This is great for businesses working towards targeting consumers in their geo as well as national brands trying to target consumers on a local level. Brands still hold a place online, but local search is definitely finding the consumers that are at the end of the purchase funnel – the “ready-to-buy” consumers.

SuperGuarantee – Too Good to be True?
Nicholas Grohne
Superpages is about to unveil a new program called SuperGuarantee. Around 3,000 headings will be backed by this program. Users must register to partake. Companies who are backed by this program will have a distinguishing emblem indicating their participation. If there’s a problem between the consumer and the vendor, SuperPages.com will come in and attempt to mediate. If the problem still cannot be solved to the satisfaction of both parties, Idearc has agreed to pay up to a $500 settlement. I think it will be interesting to see how much this increases SuperPages.com market share. You would have to think that any consumer is willing to switch whichever IYP they are loyal to for a sure thing. I think something like this could turn the IYP business upside down and if other IYPs don’t conform, they may risk obsoleteness… But first IYP users must buy into this new “too good to be true” offer from Idearc.
