The LA Times posed the question, “Is Facebook Places a foursquare killer?” the day of the Facebook Places launch. At first glance, one would be remiss to disagree, as Facebook’s social prowess makes foursquare’s location-based service look puny in comparison.
However, just four days after Facebook launched Facebook Places, foursquare marked its biggest growth spurt ever. Fourquare increased from 2.6 million users before Facebook’s mobile social validating launch on August 19th to 3 million users as of August 29th. According to Mashable.com, foursquare will continue to grow at a rate of 15,000 users a day.
The votes are in, and it seems foursquare is still the mayor of location-based mobile social networks. Why? Well, there are many takes on the issue out there. Read the full article…

Just last month Gregg Stewart outlined some key marketing opportunities that businesses can use via check-in services, mainly foursquare. Although foursquare pretty much pioneered the marketable check-in space, they’ve now got some hefty competition to worry about, i.e. Facebook Places. If this is the first you are hearing about Places, then you are a step behind the rest of the technologically savvy US population. Just last week, Facebook rolled out Places, which is a check-in application that will allow you to tell your friends where you are.

There is no bashing or insult throwing, just plain facts. The importance of local search and mobile is highlighted, as well as consumer expectations. These pieces fit together beautifully to show that local-mobile-search programs can produce results. Read the full article…

Survey results presented at last week’s SMX Advanced Seattle during the “Location Services: The New Local Search?” session revealed that while more advertisers using foursquare believe doing so helps grow their business than not, only 10% of advertisers surveyed said they would actually pay to use foursquare. Is this cause for alarm for foursquare? Read the full article…

CEO Mike Flanagan has high aspirations of becoming mayor. Has he finally tossed his hat into the ring? While his dedication has poised him for a serious mayoral run, his campaign is nothing political. He simply wants to retain the elite “mayor” status of his local park. Via foursquare, Flanagan recently became mayor of said park, only to be ousted by another frequent visitor, who checked in more often through the popular social site on the mobile Web.
That having been said written, foursquare is in serious contention for the local-search marketshare. Read the full article…
