  2. New Canonical Tag Helps Ease Duplicate Content Fears

    Duplicate content got you down? Well the major search engines of the world have come together to help alleviate these fears with a new canonical tag. If your site has the same content on multiple URLs, by simply adding this new tag in the head section of the duplicate pages, a webmaster is now able to tell the engine which page should be considered the authority and not run the risk of the dreaded duplicate content filter. All three major engines (Google, Yahoo and MSN) came together to recognize this tag in an attempt to serve better search results. It should be noted that “link juice” is not passed with this method.

  3. Online Video Gaining Momentum

    The results are in and the verdict is that American’s love for video online is spreading like wildfire. Monday, comScore released its November 2008 data showing U.S. online video consumption grew 34 percent compared to a year ago. That means 12.7 billion online videos were viewed in November.

  4. Release of Microsoft SearchPerks

    Microsoft recently announced the release of their new SearchPerks program, which provides incentives to users to search on the MSN/Live by rewarding them with “tickets” that can be exchanged for prizes.

    Each time a user performs a search they receive one ticket. Users can collect up to 25 tickets per day, and you can receive 500 tickets just for signing up. The program, which runs from October 1st to April 15th, will allow participants to cash in their tickets at the end of April. Prizes will include items such as ringtones, music downloads, books and even frequent flyer miles.

  5. Facebook Changing its Face with Microsoft

    Microsoft will soon be providing search and paid listings on Facebook. The launch is expected later this fall.  Facebook has not decided how much of Microsoft’s search will be implemented or how much inventory will be offered. Microsoft is hoping that the deal will increase their revenue per search.

  6. Semantic Search Engines The Future of Search?

    A new generation of search engines are starting to become publicly available and so it’s time to start thinking about how they will affect SEO efforts.

    The new search engines I’m talking about are the semantic search engines, meaning they are search engines that can be queried using natural language (not keywords like when using Google). Behind the scenes, these search engines try to understand the meaning behind the text web pages and so when you query them, they map what your query means and find answer based on the meaning they’ve extracted. It’s all very neat, and there are many examples: Powerset (which Microsoft recently acquired), Hakia, [true knowledge], Cognition and a few others.

  7. People Want Their Privacy

    Google was recently the center of negative attention when it was brought to the publics’ attention that they did not have a link to their Privacy Policy readily available from their homepage. Yahoo! and MSN both implemented the policy on their respective homepages and in an attempt to ride the wave, Ask.com has recently added a link as well.
