  1. Reaching the Mobile Shopper: Before, During and After the Big Sale

    Kelsey Johnson

When the term “mobile shopping” comes to mind, you probably associate it with a purchase. However, this is not necessarily the case. The function of mobile in the shopping process is one that is difficult to define, but it’s quickly becoming essential for advertisers to do so. 15miles President Gregg Stewart outlines the role of mobile in the shopping process before, during and after the sale in his most recent ClickZ article. 2. Foursquare Unveils “Explore” Recommendation Feature

    Joanna J. Cheney

As we’ve been talking about on our blog for the past week, check-in apps are all the rage right now. Foursquare seems to be the front runner and that may be because of their ever-innovating business sense.

Last week, in conjunction with the the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive show, Foursquare unveiled the 3.0 version of its app, containing a new recommendation feature called “Explore.” Recommendations are based on you and your friends’ Foursquare activity history and that’s the best part about it, in my opinion. There are no ratings to deal with unlike Google Hotpot or Yelp; “Explore” is based purely on your check-in activity. Read the full article…

  3. No App Fits All Needs – Part 2

    Greg Crum

Yesterday’s post summarized the results from a brief survey I conducted.  As mentioned, it would not be statistically accurate to project the results across the market but the results do provide directional insight.  The key takeaway from my previous post is that no one app fits all the local search needs of users.  Therefore, mobile marketers need to ensure coverage across the leaders in the space for finding venues, checking in, and identifying specials, offers, or deals.  This post will take that concept and put it into action for your mobile local search efforts.

  4. Checking In: A Rewarding Experience

    Michael Kust

The location-based service market is quickly filling up with competition for checking into local businesses.  Searching for ways to stand out among the competition, many location-based service providers have begun to provide special offers from local businesses for those who check-in using their service.

  5. No Location Based App Fits All Needs – Market Accordingly

    Greg Crum

I posted a survey yesterday as an attempt to identify 1) the most used location based applications (i.e. Google Maps, Groupon, Foursquare, Yelp, etc.) on mobile devices and 2) new mobile applications that I had not experimented with yet.  However, the outcome was overwhelmingly that no one app serves all needs.  Users access location based applications for a myriad of reasons with the most popular being searching for venues, “checking in” to let their social network know what they’re up to, and finding specials/deals/offers/coupons.  The results from my brief survey show that users are accessing multiple applications depending on their purpose.  This presents a challenge for marketers as it further signifies the need for a diversified mobile marketing program but automation & management has not yet caught up with the market.

  6. Mobile Apps to Reach $38 Billion in Revenue by 2015

    Chelsea Paulson

It’s hard to imagine life without your favorite apps. Luckily, with roughly 350,000 to choose from and a presence on almost every mobile platform, apps won’t be going anywhere soon. According to a recent Forrester Research report, this number will continue to grow as corporations spend up to $17 billion creating apps for their products and services over the next four years. The report estimates that mobile app revenue will hit $38 billion by 2015. Furthermore, Forrester outlines vast growth in enterprise business opportunities and estimates that combined revenues from mobile apps, services and business management will total $54.6 billion in 2015.

  7. As Blizzards Freeze the Midwest, Foursquare Heats Up!

    Andrea Loar

With Blizzard Warnings in effect all across the Midwest, many people are snowed in. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t turn to your trusty phone to see what is going on with your friends around town to keep up to date.

As some may already know, “Snowpocalypses” are popping up in the larger cities getting hit with the frigid weather on Foursquare. Foursquare is deeming this a “Super Swarm”, which means that over 250 people have to have checked-in at the same place at similar times. Check-ins are growing rapidly here in Kansas City – at 6:00pm there were 118 check-ins, at 6:32pm there were 253 check-ins and at 7:52pm there were 427 check-ins so far!

The windy city is seeing an even larger amount of check-ins (a big thanks to a friend in Chicago for the screen shot!):

It will be fun to keep up checking out the check-ins and photos to see how many people participate during this crazy blizzard. Feel free to post any updates to your cities’ “Snowpocalypse” below.  Stay warm!
