Smartphone ownership is steadily growing and many marketers are wondering what the best method is to produce content for mobile phones – Mobile Web sites or Mobile Apps?
Either way you look at it, businesses need to address how they are going to provide consumers with mobile content. It has been estimated that by 2014, half of Americans’ Web browsing will be done on mobile devices. With that being said, one of the biggest decisions for mobile marketers is whether you should build a mobile site or app – or both.

The smartphone market is increasing and will continue to do so at a feverish pace. Most estimates say by at least 2013 over half of the US mobile handset population will be smartphone classified. In fact, one projected estimate has this happening as soon as 2011. In accordance with those numbers, the IDC has recently released their forecast for mobile device operating system market shares for 2014, and their numbers are a bit surprising.

The LA Times posed the question, “Is Facebook Places a foursquare killer?” the day of the Facebook Places launch. At first glance, one would be remiss to disagree, as Facebook’s social prowess makes foursquare’s location-based service look puny in comparison.
However, just four days after Facebook launched Facebook Places, foursquare marked its biggest growth spurt ever. Fourquare increased from 2.6 million users before Facebook’s mobile social validating launch on August 19th to 3 million users as of August 29th. According to Mashable.com, foursquare will continue to grow at a rate of 15,000 users a day.
The votes are in, and it seems foursquare is still the mayor of location-based mobile social networks. Why? Well, there are many takes on the issue out there. Read the full article…

I had the opportunity to attend the Search Engine Strategies conference the week of August 16th in San Francisco, and now, approximately a week later, as I review the conference materials, my mess of scribbled notes, and the slew of tweets highlighting those nuggets of information shared by various speakers during the show, I find myself in a reflection mode. What did I learn? What value did I take away from the conference? To sum it up, the key message that I walked away with, is that the space is changing… and QUICKLY, and as marketers, we need to adapt, test, and innovate if we are to help define future strategies. While mobile search is surging, 30 percent of U.S. marketers are still unsure about the importance of an optimized mobile-search plan. In a recent Adotas article, “Right Here, Right Now: Local Advertisers and Mobile,” 15miles CEO Mike Flanagan outlines some mobile statistics that put that 30 percent into hiding.
There is no bashing or insult throwing, just plain facts. The importance of local search and mobile is highlighted, as well as consumer expectations. These pieces fit together beautifully to show that local-mobile-search programs can produce results. Read the full article…

For those of us who use our iPhones to manage a large portion of our lives these days, this is pretty exciting. Once of the few things we can’t do on our phones is open or manage Excel or Word attachments. But now, instead of sending it to our email, if someone posts to Google Docs, we can view those documents from our mobile browsers (currently supports Android, iPhone & iPad). I’ll be pushing this in my own office about three minutes after posting this blog (gotta refill my coffee first).
Check out the official announcement.

Survey results presented at last week’s SMX Advanced Seattle during the “Location Services: The New Local Search?” session revealed that while more advertisers using foursquare believe doing so helps grow their business than not, only 10% of advertisers surveyed said they would actually pay to use foursquare. Is this cause for alarm for foursquare? Read the full article…
