In addition to the 200-plus ranking factors that already influence site ranking on Google, site speed may soon be added to the mix. Site speed is already a factor in the AdWords quality score, and Matt Cutts from Google recently discussed this as a strong possibility for the organic algorithm in 2010. This makes sense — in today’s busy world, no one has the time to wait for a page to load.
How much will this really play a role in rankings, though? That is yet to be determined, but with more than 200 ranking factors in Google’s algorithm, I can’t imagine it will be a very noticeable change. Every little bit counts, and this would lend a hand in improving the overall user experience.

A member of Google’s Search Quality group, Matt Cutts blogged that Google will release its Caffeine search engine index after the holidays. This new index is being developed to improve Google’s indexing infrastructure and give users better results. Because this is a busy time for Webmasters, Google is releasing this after the holidays. Until then, this technology will go live at one data center, which will affect a limited number of users. This prerelease will help Google continually collect data and improve the technology. This is just another reason why having a continuous and well-rounded SEO program is so important.

Each week, the PPC’s and the SEO’s in our office get together to discuss the various goings-on in our relative worlds. Mostly, it’s a riveting roundtable of deliverables and recaps, observations about the current happenings in the interactive space, a few pleasantries, and then it’s back to our desks and our third cups of coffee. Last week, however, a conversation formed about the relationship between our two products. There’s always been something of a rivalry between us, but what none of us ever mentions when we’re teasing each other like bullies on a playground is the fact that (a) many of us have played both sides of that particular professional field at one point or another, and (b) while both have more than enough statistical support to back up their value independently, they work even better as a team.

You’ve heard the old adage that first impressions are everything. Well, research suggests that Web users make aesthetic decisions about their overall visual impressions of websites in as little as 50 milliseconds. That’s 1/20 of a second! As advocates for creative, we can conclude that aesthetics do, in fact, play a major role in the user’s online experience, much the same way that aesthetics affect a shopper’s experience at a physical, brick-and-mortar storefront. For example, shoppers will unlikely return to a store if the stylistic elements or navigation aides prohibit a creative, welcoming aura or simple shopping experience. Read the full article…

I’m sure you’ve tried it. We’ve all done it at some point in our lives. Yes, I’ll admit that I’ve Googled myself. And I’m willing to bet you have, too. But you know what? That’s okay. Go ahead and Google yourself. Just don’t blame Google when you find something you don’t like.

With the recent announcement of Yahoo no longer supporting the meta keywords tag, many are asking, “What’s the point of still using it?” What we will probably find is that many interactive agencies have stopped using this tag a long time ago since other major search engines stopped supporting it. Yahoo was the only major search engine that still supported this meta keywords tag up until about a week ago.
