  1. Groupon: Pedaling Toward Success

Vocal With the Locals: Groupon Success

    LeAnn Hoksch

Do you remember when mom would scour the Sunday edition of the local newspaper to clip the best coupons? Coupon clipping has almost become extinct with the development of daily-deal services online and via mobile apps. Groupon and LivingSocial have successfully simplified the process of purchasing discounted products and services on their group-buying, social-sharing platforms.

Since launching back in November 2008, Groupon is considered one of the fastest growing websites, having sold over 28 million Groupons, saving consumers $1.1 billion and accounting for over 27 million subscribers. Giving it a run for its savings is LivingSocial, which aims to be a key player in the online-couponing space (as of January 2011, its subscriber base is trending toward 20 million members).

And Groupon has two local businesses pedaling toward success…

  2. Oreo and Lil Wayne’s World Record Facebook “Like” Faceoff

    Kyle O'Boyle

On Tuesday, at roughly 8:00AM CST, Oreo posted a status on their Facebook wall, attempting to get as many people as possible to “Like” their post so they could set the world record for the most Facebook post “Likes”. About five hours later, Oreo’s plans were dunked (pun totally intended) in a giant glass of Lil Wayne. The hip-hop icon caught wind of the frosted cream stuffed cookie company’s attempt at a world record, and knowing how socially in-tune his own audience was, posted a nearly identical post requesting as many “Likes” as possible in a 24-hour period in order to set the record.

  3. Cross-Channel Marketing: Super Bowl and Beyond

    Rebekah Thomas

A question from one of my clients reminded me yesterday of one principle that’s easy to forget when focusing mainly on one facet of online marketing day in and day out. Funnily enough, this principle hangs above my desk splashed across my college degree in bright purple letters: Integrated Marketing Communication; such a buzz phrase a few years ago. We don’t really see those words anymore but the industry still buzzes about the power of engaging multiple media channels together and watching how they impact one another, which they absolutely do. 4. As Blizzards Freeze the Midwest, Foursquare Heats Up!

    Andrea Loar

With Blizzard Warnings in effect all across the Midwest, many people are snowed in. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t turn to your trusty phone to see what is going on with your friends around town to keep up to date.

As some may already know, “Snowpocalypses” are popping up in the larger cities getting hit with the frigid weather on Foursquare. Foursquare is deeming this a “Super Swarm”, which means that over 250 people have to have checked-in at the same place at similar times. Check-ins are growing rapidly here in Kansas City – at 6:00pm there were 118 check-ins, at 6:32pm there were 253 check-ins and at 7:52pm there were 427 check-ins so far!

The windy city is seeing an even larger amount of check-ins (a big thanks to a friend in Chicago for the screen shot!):

It will be fun to keep up checking out the check-ins and photos to see how many people participate during this crazy blizzard. Feel free to post any updates to your cities’ “Snowpocalypse” below.  Stay warm!

  5. Using Social Media Marketing in a B2B Industry

    LeAnn Hoksch

Business-to-business (B2B) industries and social media – the two aren’t always considered a good mix. TMPDM/15miles CEO, Mike Flanagan, however feels the opposite and in his latest Adotas article, “B2B: Finding a Home in the Social Neighborhood,” Mike discusses how B2B companies can leverage social media to achieve their overall marketing efforts. 6. Facebook and Twitter Projected to See Massive Increases in Advertising Revenue in 2011

    Kyle O'Boyle

In fall 2007, social media giant Facebook rolled out their Facebook Ads platform. From that moment on, social media advertising has been the “hip” thing to do in the online marketing world.  In fact, a report released yesterday by eMarketer projects massive increases in ad spend on social media sites, with a nearly $2.5 billion worldwide spending increase for 2011. Projections like these make it obvious that social advertising is transforming from a trendy marketing strategy into a solid online marketing necessity.
