  1. How to Avoid YouTube’s “Dislike” Button: Don’t Ask Justin Bieber

    Kyle O'Boyle

As I panned the internet for something interesting to blog about, the same topic, no matter how hard I tried to avoid it, kept slapping me in the face over and over again. No, it wasn’t Justin Bieber’s glorious locks that were causing the now ever-present facial lacerations; it was the staggering amount of “dislikes” his YouTube videos have, in particular his music video for the song “Baby”. The video is the most viewed video in YouTube history, garnishing over 500 million total views to date.  As Spider-Man’s wise Uncle Ben said, “With great power comes great responsibility”, and for Bieber his great power of wooing tweenies across the world has, in turn, earned his top video over 1 million “I dislike this” clicks…a responsibility no 17-year old should have to burden, even if that 17-year old is the one person solely responsible for bringing back the bowl-cut.

  2. The Popularity of the Hashtag….on Facebook?!!!

    Terri Greene

Lately as I have been conversing and nosing around on both my Facebook and Twitter accounts, I have noticed one common theme…. the hashtag. For those who are not familiar with the hashtag this is simply the pound or hash sign (#) placed in front of a word or phrase with no spaces (i.e. #TGIF or #Ihatemondays).

  3. No Location Based App Fits All Needs – Market Accordingly

    Greg Crum

I posted a survey yesterday as an attempt to identify 1) the most used location based applications (i.e. Google Maps, Groupon, Foursquare, Yelp, etc.) on mobile devices and 2) new mobile applications that I had not experimented with yet.  However, the outcome was overwhelmingly that no one app serves all needs.  Users access location based applications for a myriad of reasons with the most popular being searching for venues, “checking in” to let their social network know what they’re up to, and finding specials/deals/offers/coupons.  The results from my brief survey show that users are accessing multiple applications depending on their purpose.  This presents a challenge for marketers as it further signifies the need for a diversified mobile marketing program but automation & management has not yet caught up with the market.

  4. Google Tries Social…Again?

    LeAnn Hoksch

Rumors flew and Twitter was buzzing this weekend with the news that that Google will attempt, yet again, to infiltrate the social media marketplace with its newest service, Google Circles. The major gossip was that Google would launch this new service at SXSW over the weekend; however, rumors were silenced yesterday when SXSW confirmed that Google would not be rolling out Circles at their event. They didn’t, however, deny that Circles exists. SXSW stated “Google has now officially denied that Circles will launch here, but not that it exists.” Read the full article…

  7. Groupon: Pedaling Toward Success

Vocal With the Locals: Groupon Success

    LeAnn Hoksch

Do you remember when mom would scour the Sunday edition of the local newspaper to clip the best coupons? Coupon clipping has almost become extinct with the development of daily-deal services online and via mobile apps. Groupon and LivingSocial have successfully simplified the process of purchasing discounted products and services on their group-buying, social-sharing platforms.

Since launching back in November 2008, Groupon is considered one of the fastest growing websites, having sold over 28 million Groupons, saving consumers $1.1 billion and accounting for over 27 million subscribers. Giving it a run for its savings is LivingSocial, which aims to be a key player in the online-couponing space (as of January 2011, its subscriber base is trending toward 20 million members).

And Groupon has two local businesses pedaling toward success…
