What’s Happening With Twitter?

Twitter, the real-time information network that provides users ongoing engagement with each other, has recently monetized their natural feed through a combination of promoted tweets, trends and even one particular feed (@earlybird) that retweets special offers. Back in April when Twitter began offering these paid placements, some pretty big names signed on, including Sony Pictures, Red Bull, Starbucks and Best Buy.

TweetUp’s Genius: Signal-to-Noise Ratio

In general, I am skeptical when “advertisements” and “social media” are spoken in the same breath. Social media is supposed to be consumer driven, inclusive and authentic. But advertisements are driven by business, tend to be intrusive and create a lot of noise. So the idea of them together is an oxymoron. This brings us to news about their intermingling.
TweetUp is a new start-up that launched this week. It is basically a Twitter search engine, except that it has a built-in ad platform. TweetUp’s mission is to “…bring great tweets and tweeters to all the content and locations that are important to [users].” The idea of TweetUp is to eliminate noise in Twitter streams, rather than introduce it.

Twitter Jumps Into the Paid Advertising Mix

Show me the money! After staying away from a monetary system, social giant Twitter finally gave into the almighty dollar. Recently, Twitter revealed its ad model for “Promoted Tweets.” This marks the first phase of Twitter’s paid-advertising initiative with select businesses, such as Best Buy, Red Bull, Sony Pictures and Starbucks, already on board. Paid advertisements will appear at the top of the search results when a Twitter user searches for a keyword that an advertiser bought.

Superpages Helps Advertisers Gain Presence on Twitter

This week, Superpages.com announced a new value-added service: It will now be providing coupons via Twitter. Superpages’ original Twitter account allows Twitter users to search for a product/service and geography, and the company responds with relevant local-business information. Superpages upped the ante by setting up 72 city-specific Twitter accounts that users can follow for business coupons in their areas.
