Microsoft and Yahoo gained approval from the US Department of Justice and the European Commission last week to move forward with integrating their two search engines into one. They have set a goal for completion late 2010 or early 2011. The two companies believe that this alliance will enable them to more effectively take on search giant Google. According to Hitwise, in January Google held 63.91% of search volume; Yahoo and Bing held 10.80% and 9.23% respectively. So they will have their work cut out for them.

Yahoo No Longer Supports the Meta Keywords Tag

With the recent announcement of Yahoo no longer supporting the meta keywords tag, many are asking, “What’s the point of still using it?” What we will probably find is that many interactive agencies have stopped using this tag a long time ago since other major search engines stopped supporting it. Yahoo was the only major search engine that still supported this meta keywords tag up until about a week ago.

Coming Soon: Yahoo’s Own Ad Editor

Yahoo will soon begin rolling out an offline ad editor for its search marketing platform similar to Google’s AdWords Editor. Yahoo states that the new editor tool should reduce the time it takes to restructure an account from three hours to only 30 minutes. According to Yahoo, in the future, the tool will have the ability for advertisers to export the data to other platforms such as Microsoft.
The tool is currently in beta but is scheduled to roll out early in 2010.

Yahoo! Launches New Search Format

Right around the time the Bing/Yahoo! merger was announced, Yahoo! claimed they were never a part of the search game, even if nobody believed this claim.
Yahoo! just launched its new search format. On the left column, you can filter results or refine your search by related concepts. More prominent placement for Search Pad and an expansion of Search Assist are also featured. Yahoo! also claims it has improved image and video search, and speed and performance are also better across the board.
