  2. Print Yellow Pages Distribution Obstacles are a Plenty

    It’s no secret that patch-work legislation continues to surface in certain states, as well as communities trying to limit publisher distribution of phone books to consumers and businesses. By now, most of us know the following:

    • Phone books are in fact made from wood chips and recycled paper, not virgin trees.
    • Soy based inks are used to print the directories and very few phone books end up in landfills, thanks to recycling efforts.
    • Publishers have created websites giving consumers the option to opt-out from receiving a phone book at their address. In many areas, White Pages residential directories no longer being distributed to the masses. Instead, many publishers offer White Pages phone books as opt-in, only being distributed to consumers who contact the publisher to request a copy.

    However, none of this seems to be enough to stop the legislation since “green” has become the Kool-Aid of choice.

  3. Yellowbook to Launch Daily Deal Site

    It appears as though Yellowbook will be the first US YP publisher to launch efforts into the group buying market when they launch “Weforia” next month. This new endeavor will be tested in three markets: Phoenix, Boston and Ft. Myers, with expansion expected, assuming success. The daily deals will appear on their own sites, as well as in conjunction with Yellowbook.com and via Yellowbook’s mobile application. So far, sales teams have generated a lot of interest from businesses, and there does not appear to be any shortage of deals.

    As part of a unique marketing campaign to prove the value of Print Yellow Pages advertising, Australian Yellow Pages provider Sensis opened a new pizzeria, the Hidden Restaurant, in Melbourne Australia with the goal of tracking business leads. Utilizing flyers, a Facebook page and website, they prompted consumers to find the business by “just looking us up the way you would any other business” from April 12th to the 25th 2010 and the pizzas would be free.   6. Yellow Pages Group Acquires Canpages

    On Tuesday, Yellow Pages Group Canada (YPG) announced that it has struck a deal with Canpages, one of Canada’s top Yellow Pages and Internet Yellow Pages publishers. YPG will acquire Canpages for roughly C$225 million in hopes of harnessing Canpages’ established user base and technology to accelerate YPG’s transition to digital.

    Boasting a resurgence in trade shows, exhibitions and conferences in 2010, Las Vegas (Paris Hotel & Casino, specifically) is hosting this year’s annual Yellow Pages Association (YPA) Conference, where you can find TMP Directional Marketing on April 19–20. The theme of this year’s conference is “Transformers,” which is little about Michael Bay’s famous robot movies and more about the transformations occurring in the Yellow Pages industry.
